We conceive of ASM research to include critical analyses of federated social media (e.g., Mastodon and Pixelfed), efforts to develop social media protocols (e.g., ActivityPub, ATProto, Nostr), peer-to-peer applications (e.g., Secure Scuttlebutt), and niche social media catering to specific political perspectives (e.g., Gab). A variety of methodologies is welcome so long as they adhere to the highest ethical standards.
