Alex Prichard<p>So saddened to hear of Prof Andrew Linklater’s passing. He was a true disciplinary pioneer, carving out space for so much critical work in International Relations, particularly for theorists like me. His work ranged from Hegel and Marx to just war theory, from cosmopolitanism to Elias’s process sociology. He was happy to take a punt on my incoherent PhD project in 2001 and supported from then on. He loved single malts and jazz. </p><p><a href="https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/interpol/staff-profiles/listing/profile/adl/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">aber.ac.uk/en/interpol/staff-p</span><span class="invisible">rofiles/listing/profile/adl/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/InternationalRelations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternationalRelations</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/IRTheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IRTheory</span></a></p>
Alex Prichard<p>I’ve just drafted the first ever textbook chapter on anarchist IR theory. Woo!! </p><p>Anarchist international theory dates back to Proudhon’s War and Peace (1861), and was developed by e.g., Noam Chomsky, Richard Falk, Thomas Weiss, and many more since the 1990s. </p><p>Despite centrality of anarchy to IR, few know this history/theory, and it’s telling that the textbook (and my chapter) will be published in Spanish, while the references are all to English language texts.</p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/politicalscience" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>politicalscience</span></a></span> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/IRTheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IRTheory</span></a></p>
Tom Ashby<p>On 7 December, 15:00-1700, the EUI Intellectual History Working Group will host a lecture by Matthew Specter (Berkeley) on his book that explores nineteenth-century origins of political realism, "The Atlantic Realists: Empire and International Political Thought between Germany and the United States" (Stanford UP, 2022). Alongside the in-person event there will be a live-stream. Alex Prichard<p>Thomas Risse came to Exeter to introduce this book a couple of weeks ago. Great sessions and a very generous guy. In my comments I made the slightly provocative claim that this is the first empirical proof of anarchism - by non-anarchists. He laughed nervously. There are gaps (e.g., class, global north), but this is well worth a read for anyone interested in <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/MajorityWorld" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MajorityWorld</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/irtheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>irtheory</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/anthropologyofthestate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anthropologyofthestate</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/development" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>development</span></a> and <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> I’ll write a review next year.</p><p><a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/effective-governance-under-anarchy/28FE020C4AABAA4BEE00BBED90465255" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cambridge.org/core/books/effec</span><span class="invisible">tive-governance-under-anarchy/28FE020C4AABAA4BEE00BBED90465255</span></a></p>
