Press Gazette: PR industry alarmed at rise of fake commenters exposed by Press Gazette. “Press Gazette’s investigation into fake experts being widely quoted in the national press has prompted a huge reaction from the PR industry. Meanwhile various publishers are understood to be reviewing content and policies in the wake of the story, and the BBC has removed one article altogether from its […]

PressGazette: Virtual reality: The widely-quoted media experts who are not what they seem. “Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, anyone can generate comment, on any subject, in an instant. It is a technology that appears to have fuelled a rise in expert commentators who have appeared widely in national newspapers but who are either not real, not what they seem to be or at the very least have […]

Troy Hunt: A Sneaky Phish Just Grabbed my Mailchimp Mailing List. “You know when you’re really jet lagged and really tired and the cogs in your head are just moving that little bit too slow? That’s me right now, and the penny has just dropped that a Mailchimp phish has grabbed my credentials, logged into my account and exported the mailing list for this blog. I’m deliberately keeping this […]

"Independent stock commentator David Webb said he would make the Webb-site Database available... on GitHub after his death, in a reversal of his earlier plans to shut down the site for good. Webb revealed in a post on Monday that he received over 100 offers to take forward his website and database created in 1998 after announcing he had only a few months to live after a long battle with cancer last month."

This one time in maybe 2018 I pissed off a few uni colleagues. At a "senate" meeting (it deserves quotation marks at my school) some people with #psychometrics training & experience, including me, explained that a specific kind of #assessment was invalid--as in zero validity for intended purpose--so we should not use it. It literally provides no information about what it says, so we might as well roll dice or draw #random words from a hat.

The administration argued vehemently for keeping the assessment. They claimed it was valid (we showed them it wasn't). They claimed that a "caring" or "astute" instructor could glean valuable information (we showed them that this wasn't possible). They appealed to the other professors, implying that not using this assessment meant they didn't care about their students, and that voting to eliminate this assessment meant they (the eggheaded intellectuals) were being dunked on by the eggheaded intellectuals.

The measure failed and we still use the assessment. After the meeting I and someone else were bemoaning the result. I said something like "What happened in there was Trumpian." A colleague walking by overheard and angrily asked, "What do you mean by that?!"

I said, "The faculty heard from the experts telling them something they didn't like and they chose to go with the people who had no expertise telling them what they wanted to hear."

(I am sometimes not diplomatic; this makes a good story, but I really wish I had found a better way to say that.)

The person audibly huffed, actually turned on their heel, and walked away. They haven't spoken to me since.

The Association of Online Educators in Eastern Europe might have taken some inspiration from the World Association for Online Education that I founded in 1998. Now they have invited me to present a keynote address at their annual conference in Sarajevo. The topic is "AI Challenges for University Educators," and it is relevant to all teachers and learners. I have not mentioned AI before, but I have been using it (not for writing!), and I need to understand such technologies for the EU-Asia grant project for intergovernmental digital partnerships.

The Death of Government Expertise

Why #Trump and #Musk are on a firing spree
theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/

" #DOGE isn’t really a dept... and it has little to do with saving money... The whole enterprise is an attack against civil servants & the very notion of apolitical #expertise...

Modern societies, as #Americans are soon to learn, cannot function without #experts in every field, especially the many thousands who work in #public service."

Continued thread

Populists are generally wary of #experts, especially those who work for the government, but #ElonMusk is no man of the people: He is the richest human being in the world, & he runs major companies that rely both on government-provided #expertise & significant government subsidies. As @anneapplebaum wrote, “Musk has made no attempt to professionally audit or even understand many of the programs being cut”—a willful indifference that gives away the game.

Continued thread

It is a name that #Trump is allowing a favored donor & ally to use in a reckless campaign against various targets in the federal govt. The whole enterprise is an attack against #CivilServants & the very notion of #apolitical #expertise.

Trump allies make noises about expert failures—& yes, experts sometimes do fail. In particular, #MAGA world continues to demonize what its constituents believe was the medical establishment’s attempt to curtail civil rights during the pandemic…

"In the early 20th century, the Spanish writer José Ortega y Gasset warned that such resentment would eventually become the enemy of talent and ability. “The mass crushes beneath it everything that is different,” he wrote in 1930, “everything that is excellent, individual, qualified and select. Anybody who is not like everybody, who does not think like everybody, runs the risk of being eliminated.” Trump and Musk not only feel this same impulse; they have harnessed it for their personal use.

Eventually, such attacks run out of steam when the costs begin to accumulate. No matter how many times Stalin told his scientists to plant wheat in the snow so that it could evolve to grow in the winter, the wheat (which had no political allegiances) died. Today, vaccine refusal might seem like a brave stand against white-jacketed overlords—until your children are stricken with measles or whooping cough.

Modern societies, as Americans are soon to learn, cannot function without experts in every field, especially the many thousands who work in public service. The first step in containing the damage is to see Trump’s and Musk’s goals for DOGE clearly: It is a project rooted in resentful arrogance, and its true objective is not better government, but destruction."
