It is a piece that takes us through very conflicting emotional worlds: grief, longing, the grotesque, and triumph. There is also a world premiere by Milica Djordjević. As a prelude, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Philharmonie – with Boris Blacher’s Fanfare written for the opening on 15 October 1963.

And then there were two encores. Frankly I don't think Mahler needs an encore. But hey, the band let their hair down and let rip. I couldn't hear what the first encore was, but it was fun. The second was Bernstein's Mambo from West Side Story. The orchestra's go-to encore. The audience was clapping and the orchestra was dancing, literally. Great fun!
