My eldest sang "Colors of the Wind" at her very MAGAT high school tonight for the talent show.

No one vetted her intro clip where she said she wanted to do it because it was excellent social commentary, and no one vetted her background that got projected up on stage.

As a parent, I'm both very proud of her, and very twitchy about how her Monday will go.

Without prompting from me, Mr 8 has been foraging really nice acorns and bringing them home to me, so I can make acorn porridge.

We peel them, slice them, and then soak them for days over many changes of water until they're sweet enough to cook and eat.

I made acorn porridge a year or two ago, and while I thought he was indifferent to it, it's clear that it left a positive impression. I'm really glad.

Thanks so much for the support so far this month!

We making slow progress on our March fundraising goal, can we break $500 before this weekend? We've got a couple bills (cell phone and credit card) due in the next few days.

So far y'all have really helped me survive capitalism while taking time to focus on our tiny human and look after my partner as they recover from childbirth.

We want to shoutout more exciting new connections from SWSW / SWSW EDU: @TTRPGkids! Steph does amazing work to help parents, caregivers, teachers, etc. find resources to facilitate quality tabletop role playing games (TTRPGs) for kids. We were grateful to attend the Gaming Edu meet-up they co-hosted. It was great! Check them out: ttrpgkids.com/.

Found out yesterday that my kid is texting on the reg with some random "kid" (supposedly) that she doesn't know in real life.

If this person is who he says he is, it's mostly harmless. He doesn't even live in the area. So I don't want to come down too hard and risk that it drives her into further underground/hidden comms.

But if he's NOT, I'm worried about sextortion or some other scam. If other parents have advice, I'm listening.

newsweek.com/us-housing-market “The reason why new construction finally outpaced new household formation is sobering: at least 1.6 million expected Gen Z and millennial households did not form in 2024 because of factors which included a lack of affordable housing. In short, people are not settling down and becoming homeowners because they can't afford to.” #housing #shortage #poverty #inequality #economics #parenting

My very short story “The Follies of Adulthood” turned out to be a nice hit on Medium.

Some reader feedback:

“Hits hard in the best way.”

“This is pure love!”

“You capture something so many parents will feel in their bones. And that last line? Perfectly earned.”

Read it for free on my blog, and subscribe for more “hard hitting” stories and essays.

Thoughtcicles · The Follies of AdulthoodHow my daughter reminded me to be human again.

This morning my wife wasn't feeling great, and my 5y old decided to be nice and made her a PB & J sandwich.

She brought it up to our room and dropped it off. "Aw that was really sweet of you" her mom says and takes a big bite. As she bounds away down the hallway she announces, "sorry it took so long, I had to poop in the middle of making it!"

Child A: Papa, I can't find my gloves, I think I left them inside.
Me: Have you checked your pockets?
A: Yes, but all I can find is two rocks, a stick, some string and a tea bag. But no gloves!
Me: ?! You don't even drink tea.

Today the Little One has launched Kama News, a magazine with all the latest updates on the life of Kamachan, their pet praying mantis.

Kamachan ate a moth for the first time!
Read all about it.

This is wildly surprising. And perhaps offers a tiny sliver of hope?

One of the bills opposed would have required “emergency” removal of transgender children from their parents.

On the floor, Representatives SJ Howell and Zooey Zephyr persuaded Republicans with their speeches. Bravo! 👏🏻

Thanks for the piece, @ErinInTheMorn.

Erin In The Morning · Powerful Speeches From Trans Dems Flip 29 Republicans, Anti-Trans Bills Die In MontanaBy Erin Reed

A memory. My early-teen daughter told me she didn't need The Talk because they had good sex-ed in school and on YouTube and she knew everything she needed. I told her "Good, I just need to check that you know a few things".

1. Who decides if *you* are going to have sex?

2. Who decides what sex acts *you* are going to participate in?

3. Is it OK to stop in the middle of having sex and say "Thanks, I'm done now, let's go for pizza"?

And she did in fact know the answers. ❤️
