He looked at me and he said "Kosher food.... What exactly are you looking for?"

me: "Kosher food?"

him: "Exactly What is Kosher food."

me: (a little stunned and unsure how to answer) "Food for Jews?"

him: Well we go these crackers in.... (pointing to a display of matzoh I hadn't seen). Is there anything you're looking for specifically?

me: Well that's good (I hadn't seen the matzoh). What about gefilte fish, or borcht, or bamba, or....?

him: *looks blankly* I'm sorry I'm not very.... I don't have a very... broad... experience with....

me: (really uncomfortable at this point) "It's okay. It's okay really. It's fine" and I walked away (out of the store).

I believe the guy when he says he doesn't know what kosher food is, but he was head (?) of grocery, and even though he didn't do anything wrong, it was a lesson in how important understanding can be in making someone feel welcome/unwelcome.

2/2

I had this experience Saturday and I'm only now processing it.

I want to be clear that I don't think anyone in this story is antisemitic, but one doesn't need to be hateful to make someone uncomfortable, and that should hopefully be universally applicable.

I was doing very last minute shopping for Passover supplies, and we went to a supermarket in West Vancouver, the City Market in Park Royal. I went to the International foods section, there was no Jewish/Israeli section. No broths/soups/matzoh ball mix, borcht, bamba, etc.

I went to the Customer Service desk and asked, and the woman suggested I go to "Fresh Foods". I asked why fresh foods, and it turned out she had no idea what kosher food was, so she was guessing. She mentioned they had hallal food (which was good to hear but not what I needed). She called over (head of?) grocery and explained I was looking for "kosher or Greek food", and I explained no Greek, just kosher food.

And let’s also be frank,

Peter Dutton shouldn’t be apologising to just the Lebanese Muslim community. Most certainly one of the first. But also many others.
The many things he has said over the past two decades has cause unneeded anxiety, frustration, hurt and stress to many other ethnic communities in Australia.

As a Brit who has concluded that the US under the Orange Emperor’s jackboot is ripe for civil war, I was taken aback when I stumbled on this article in ZeroHedge! Could it be true?

Ours, Yours, Theirs, No One's? Heritage of Multicultural Areas

June 10–13, 2025
ZRC SAZU, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Deadline: 10/02/2025

ZRC SAZUDEADLINE EXTENSION: Ours, Yours, Theirs, No One's? Heritage of Multicultural AreasDate of the conference: June 10 – 13, 2025 Location: Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU), Institute of Ethnomusicology, Ljubljana, Slovenia Optional: Whole day excursion to the Kočevska (Gottschee) region Deadline for submission of abstracts: February 10, 2025   The Institute of Ethnomusicology ZRC SAZU invites paper submissions for the International Conference Ours, Yours, Theirs, No One's? Heritage of Multicultural Areas.   The aim of the conference is to shed light on the role and understanding of heritage and heritagisation processes in border areas, where different cultures and languages have traditionally come into contact. We will look at heritage in the broadest sense as the ways in which communities and individuals understand, use, value and make sense of the past. We aim to answer the question of how processes related to heritage have been shaped by political and historical circumstances: in particular, by changing political borders (e.g. after the First and Second World Wars), the rise of populisms, demographic changes, e.g. due to population displacements and resettlements, as well as the 'conflicts' between different interpretations of the past and memories. The following types of contributions are particularly welcome: Papers that shed light on the processes that have led to issues in relation to heritage and differences in understanding and interpretation of heritage, and that offer conceptual reflections on the heritage of multicultural or border areas, post-imperial heritage, national heritage, etc. Papers dealing with heritage and heritagisation as a tool to achieve the goals of minorities, local, national and transnational communities (emancipation of minorities, regional/local development, political goals/intergovernmental relations, etc.) and reflecting on the role of science in these processes. Papers dealing with the dissonance of heritage and memory in the context of changing national borders, totalitarian regimes, wars, population displacement and resettlements, genocide, etc. as well as good practices in overcoming this dissonance. We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines. Please send your proposals (up to 300 words and a short CV (max. 100 words)) via online form or in the attached form (Word document) by e-mail to gni@zrc-sazu.si by February 10, 2025. Applicants will be notified of selection by the end of February 2025.   If you have any questions, please contact Anja Moric (anja.moric@zrc-sazu.si) or Marjeta Pisk (marjeta.pisk@zrc-sazu.si).   The conference is part of the research project The Weight of the past. Heritage of the Multicultural Area: Case Study of Gottschee.
#Introduction

1. Reality is the only morality. I reject all symbolism and emotion.
2. I know good people from every religion, tribe, race, culture, ethnicity, and social class. To protect each group, ethno-nationalism is required.
3. All of our environmental problems can be cured through Half Earth.
4. Natural Rights > (human | civil rights).
5. Eugenics is necessary to ensure genetic health.
6. People need some positive transcendent goal or they are merely reacting to fears and appetites.

"Such was the controversy around #multiculturalism by the year 2000 that it was almost de rigueur for senior politicians to line up to denounce its failure. High-profile variations on this argument have been made by David Blunkett, David Cameron, Nigel Farage and Suella Braverman. The newly installed leader of the Conservative party, Kemi Badenoch, looks set to embark on a similar course."

OK so the "Darkness into Light" episode of "Not Your Butter Chicken," which you can watch at this link, shows the #Lethbridge Research and Development Centre where I work.

In this show, it was nice to see Harwinder and Dr. Priti Maheshwari, who both work at the research centre. Dr. Maheshwari is a scientist and prolific organizer of vital multicultural events in Lethbridge.
